Background of the Study

Procurement practices play a significant role in ensuring that hospitals have the necessary medications and supplies for patient care. Efficient drug procurement ensures that hospitals maintain adequate stock levels, avoid shortages, and provide timely care to patients (Musa & Garba, 2023). However, inefficient procurement processes can lead to delays, wastage, and increased healthcare costs.

In Taraba State, many hospitals face challenges in drug procurement, such as supply chain disruptions, inadequate budgeting, and procurement delays. These issues can negatively affect the availability of essential medications, ultimately impacting patient care. Despite the importance of efficient procurement systems, there is limited research on procurement practices in Taraba State hospitals (Ahmed et al., 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Inefficient procurement practices in hospitals in Taraba State contribute to medication shortages, delays in treatment, and increased operational costs. Hospitals struggle with inefficient supplier relationships, lack of transparency in procurement procedures, and inadequate inventory management, resulting in suboptimal drug supply (Bello & Musa, 2023).

This study examines the procurement practices in hospitals in Taraba State and assesses their efficiency in ensuring an adequate drug supply for patient care.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the procurement practices in hospitals in Taraba State.

2. To assess the efficiency of these practices in ensuring adequate drug supply.

3. To recommend strategies for improving procurement practices in hospitals.

Research Questions

1. What are the procurement practices followed by hospitals in Taraba State?

2. How efficient are these procurement practices in ensuring a continuous drug supply?

3. What strategies can improve procurement practices to enhance drug supply efficiency in hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

1. Procurement practices in hospitals in Taraba State are inefficient in ensuring adequate drug supply.

2. Efficient procurement practices significantly improve drug supply continuity in hospitals.

3. Implementing improved procurement strategies enhances the efficiency of drug supply in hospitals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on hospitals in Taraba State, analyzing their drug procurement practices and supply efficiency. Limitations include variability in procurement practices across different hospitals and potential biases in reported procurement practices.

Definitions of Terms

• Procurement Practices: The procedures and processes followed by hospitals to acquire medications and supplies.

• Drug Supply: The availability of essential medications required for patient treatment in hospitals.

• Efficiency: The ability to provide timely, cost-effective, and uninterrupted drug supply.

• Hospitals: Healthcare institutions responsible for providing medical care, including pharmaceutical services.
